About the "TBC" label

Madeira's regional government and local councils typically publish festival dates 2–4 months before each event. Recurring annuals (Flower Festival, Atlantic Festival, Rali Vinho, Carnival, Wine Festival) reliably return every year in the same window, so we roll them forward and flag them TBC until the official programme is released. One-off events are removed from the calendar once they've passed.

Madeira events — common questions

What is the biggest festival in Madeira?
The Madeira Flower Festival in Funchal (late April to May) and the Atlantic Festival fireworks (Saturdays in June) draw the largest crowds, alongside Carnival in February and the New Year's Eve fireworks in Funchal harbour, which has held a Guinness World Record for the largest fireworks display.
When is the Madeira Wine Festival?
The Madeira Wine Festival runs at the end of August into early September, split between Funchal (Avenida Arriaga) and Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, where the traditional grape treading and harvest re-enactments take place.
Why do some events say 'TBC'?
Regional government and local councils usually publish festival programmes only 2–4 months ahead. Annual events that reliably return are rolled forward into the same window as the previous year and labelled TBC until the official dates are released.
Do I need tickets for Madeira festivals?
Most Madeira festivals — Flower Festival, Atlantic Festival, Carnival, the gastronomic festivals and New Year's Eve — are free, open-air street events. Only some concerts, the Funchal Jazz Festival's main stage and a handful of gala nights are ticketed.
Where should I stay during a big Madeira festival?
Funchal for Flower Festival, Carnival, Atlantic Festival and New Year — everything is walkable from the old town and Avenida do Mar. For the Wine Festival, staying in Câmara de Lobos or Estreito puts you next to the harvest events without Funchal's price surge.

Planning around an event?

Festivals fill Funchal's hotels months in advance — particularly Flower Festival (May), Atlantic Festival (June Saturdays) and New Year's Eve. Check the dedicated event page for location, programme and tips before locking in dates.
