Madeira Wine Lounge — events in Madeira
The tasting hub of the Madeira Wine Festival — an open-air lounge on Avenida Arriaga in Funchal where the island's wine houses pour Sercial, Verdelho, Bual and Malvasia by the glass, with live music each evening. Official dates: 27 August – 13 September 2026, and 26 August – 12 September 2027.
About Madeira Wine Lounge
Madeira wine is the island's oldest export and Madeira Wine Lounge is the week it goes back to being a farm product. Expect tastings in Avenida Arriaga, Funchal, a re-enacted pisa a pé (grape treading) in the hills, and cellar doors that stay open later than they do the rest of the year.
The wine week doesn't shut Avenida Arriaga, Funchal's hotels the way the flower or fireworks weeks do, so accommodation is genuinely findable up to a month out. The scarcer resource is time — you'll want three days to do the tastings and the field programme justice.
What to know before you go
- Accommodation in central Funchal sells out earliest — booking 3–6 months ahead is normal for the larger festivals.
- Buses to Avenida Arriaga, Funchal add extra runs around the event, and taxis are easier to find than parking. If you drive, park on the edge and walk the last stretch.
- The core atmosphere costs nothing; the extras (premium viewpoints, ticketed shows, sit-down dinners) are where budgets add up. Decide early which of those you want.
- Dress for the August weather in Avenida Arriaga, Funchal — layers work better than a single warm or waterproof piece, especially after dark.
Best time to visit
August is the anchor. The opening evening tends to be quieter than the closing weekend, so pick your night based on whether you want atmosphere or spectacle.

Frequently asked
When is Madeira Wine Lounge?+
Madeira Wine Lounge runs from 2026-08-27 through 2026-09-13. It returns to the same window each year, though exact dates can shift by a week.
How do I get to Madeira Wine Lounge and where should I stay?+
The tastings and estate visits are ticketed and small-group — book direct with the lodges (Blandy's, Justino's, Henriques & Henriques) as soon as the programme is published. Street events in Avenida Arriaga, Funchal and Câmara de Lobos are walk-up.
What's the best day or time to experience Madeira Wine Lounge?+
Mid-afternoon on Saturday is peak: sun over the vines, families out, no queues yet. By evening the tasting glasses run out and the party rolls on without them.
What are the local traditions behind Madeira Wine Lounge?+
Madeira wine is one of the world's great fortified wines — barrels are still heated in estufa lodges in Avenida Arriaga, Funchal, a tradition that dates from the 17th-century shipping routes when barrels warmed in ships' holds developed the characteristic flavour. The harvest festival is when the growers who supply those lodges get their turn in front of visitors.
