Poncha, the island drink
Poncha is Madeira's traditional spirit: aguardente de cana (sugar-cane rum), honey and lemon, shaken by hand in a tall glass with a grooved wooden stirrer called an espadilha. Classic (poncha pescador), orange (laranja), passionfruit (maracujá) and tangerine (tangerina) are the four you'll see everywhere. One is a drink. Two is a night out.
Best places to try it: Venda da Donna Maria in Funchal old town, Taberna da Poncha in Serra de Água (the mountain pass on the way to the north coast), and any harbour-side bar in Câmara de Lobos.
Rooftops, wine & late nights
For sundowners with a view, head to the rooftop bars along Avenida do Mar in Funchal. For Madeira wine in its natural habitat, Blandy's Wine Lodge runs evening tastings of Sercial, Verdelho, Bual and Malmsey. The Zona Velha (Rua de Santa Maria) stays busy past midnight at the weekend — that's where most of the live music ends up.
