About Madeira Flower Festival
Madeira Flower Festival is Madeira translating its January-to-April growing season into a parade. Floats sheathed entirely in petals move through Funchal, and the days either side of the main cortejo turn the whole city centre into a florist's back room — carpets of blossoms, wall installations, children in flower headdresses.
Book accommodation in Funchal 4–6 months out — the whole city trades on this week and rooms with balconies over the parade route go earliest. If you miss the main cortejo, the flower carpets along Avenida Arriaga stay in place for two more days.
The Festa da Flor (Madeira Flower Festival) is the island's biggest spring event — two weeks of flower-themed installations, a children's 'Wall of Hope' ceremony in Praça do Município, and a Sunday afternoon parade of flower-covered floats down Avenida Arriaga. It dates back to the 1950s and is one of the few Madeira events for which accommodation books out 4–6 months in advance.
If you can only catch one day, make it the Sunday of the parade — the floats are spectacular and the city is closed to traffic for the route. The Saturday children's ceremony is also moving and far less crowded.
What to know before you go
- Accommodation in central Funchal sells out earliest — booking 3–6 months ahead is normal for the larger festivals.
- Public transport runs extra services on the main event days, but parking near Funchal becomes very limited — arrive early or plan to walk in.
- Street programming is free. Paid elements — grandstand seats, gala dinners, indoor concerts — release in waves and disappear quickly once the dates are official.
- Photograph early. The best light and the smallest crowds are usually in the first hour of the programme, not the headline slot.

The main programme runs around April. Arrive a day early to settle in and see the build-up — set-up day is often the most photogenic.
