About Rali da Madeira

Rali da Madeira unfolds across Funchal, Santa Cruz & Santana each July, drawing a mix of islanders and visitors who plan their year around it.

Rali da Madeira is a community event first and a tourist attraction second. The programme is loose, the food is cooked by neighbours, and the best moments happen in the margins — bring cash, small notes, and no strict itinerary.

The Rali da Madeira — known for decades as the Rali Vinho Madeira and rebranded from 2024 — is the biggest annual sporting event on the island and one of the most spectacular tarmac rallies in Europe. The 2026 edition is the 67th running of the race and takes place from Thursday 30 July to Saturday 1 August 2026. It is an official round of the FIA European Rally Trophy (ERT) as well as multiple Portuguese national and regional championships.

The route packs 15 special stages and roughly 205 km of competitive tarmac into three days, all on the island's narrow, twisting mountain roads. Classic stages return year after year: Chão da Lagoa above Funchal, the fast Poiso pass, the coastal Santana stage in the north, and the plunging Encumeada descent that forms part of Rosário. Service and rally HQ are at Madeira Tecnopolo in Funchal.

The signature spectator moment is the opening urban super-special on the Avenida do Mar in downtown Funchal on Thursday afternoon — cars blasting past the seafront with grandstands packed. The rally finishes on Saturday evening with the podium ceremony at Praça do Povo on the marina. In between, the mountain stages draw huge crowds to viewpoints along the ER101, ER103 and ER228; arrive at least two hours before a stage start because access roads close early.

What to know before you go

  • Accommodation in central Funchal sells out earliest — booking 3–6 months ahead is normal for the larger festivals.
  • Public transport runs extra services on the main event days, but parking near Funchal, Santa Cruz & Santana becomes very limited — arrive early or plan to walk in.
  • Street programming is free. Paid elements — grandstand seats, gala dinners, indoor concerts — release in waves and disappear quickly once the dates are official.
  • Photograph early. The best light and the smallest crowds are usually in the first hour of the programme, not the headline slot.
  • Dates: 30 July – 1 August 2026 (Thursday to Saturday). Full timetable at ralidamadeira.com.
  • Free spectating on all stages, but roads close 2–3 hours before the first car — plan parking well in advance.
  • Best spectator stage for first-timers: the Avenida do Mar super-special on Thursday afternoon in Funchal, with grandstand seating on the seafront.
  • Best mountain stages: Chão da Lagoa (hairpins above Funchal), Santana (north coast), and the Encumeada descent on the Rosário stage.
  • Expect traffic disruption across Funchal, Santa Cruz and Santana all weekend — book airport transfers with extra buffer, especially on Saturday.

Best time to visit

The main programme runs around July. Arrive a day early to settle in and see the build-up — set-up day is often the most photogenic.
