Rally Madeira Legend — events in Madeira
Historic and classic-car rally on Madeira's mountain roads — vintage rally cars, competitive stages and a paddock display in Funchal. Traditionally staged at the end of October.
About Rally Madeira Legend
Rally Madeira Legend is a working rally, not a demonstration run. Special stages thread through Funchal & mountain stages's narrow mountain roads for three days, and if you time it right you can watch WRC-adjacent machinery slide past drystone walls you drove down the day before.
Study the stage map before you drive out — spectator zones are marshalled and the closed roads are enforced strictly. The service park in central Funchal & mountain stages is open to the public between stages and is the easiest way to see the cars up close.
What to know before you go
- Accommodation in central Funchal sells out earliest — booking 3–6 months ahead is normal for the larger festivals.
- Expect road closures near the venue and reduced parking in Funchal & mountain stages. The extra bus services are the easiest way in; taxis get scarce once the crowd builds.
- Most of what happens spills into the streets and is free to watch; ticketed concerts and reserved viewing areas tend to sell out fast.
- Cash still matters at food stalls and pop-up bars, even though card readers are increasingly common.
Best time to visit
Aim for the middle days of the October run: the crowds have arrived, the programme is in full swing, and the last-minute changes have been ironed out.

Any single super-special stage gives the whole flavour in an hour. The Friday night Funchal super-special is the most accessible if you're not renting a car.
What are the local traditions behind Rally Madeira Legend?+
Spectator etiquette: stay behind the marshalled tape, don't stand on the outside of corners, and give a thumbs-up if a course car flags you back. The last car through is a safety car — the road doesn't reopen until it passes.
