A fleet of tuna boats and fishing craft carries the statue of Our Lady of Piety in a sea procession from Caniçal harbour along the Ponta de São Lourenço coast, and the image is then returned to the clifftop chapel on Pico da Piedade. Around it: the solemn mass in the parish church, a philharmonic band, and an arraial of espetada on bay-laurel skewers, bolo do caco, poncha and live bands in the village on both nights. Free to attend. In 2026 the tuna boat drawn to carry the image is the atuneiro 'Condor'.

Festa de Nossa Senhora da Piedade (Caniçal) is one of the island's oldest romarias: a religious festival that layers a mass, a procession and a night-long arraial into the same September weekend at Caniçal, Machico. The devotional part is unmissable; the food and dancing that follow it are the reason most families make the trip.
The mass is at first light or mid-morning depending on the year; the arraial that follows runs until the small hours. If you only have one evening, pick the arraial, it's where the food, the espetada grills, the wine and the folk groups all come together.

- Cash still matters at food stalls and pop-up bars, even though card readers are increasingly common.

- Getting there: Caniçal is about 30 minutes from Funchal via the VR1/VE1 and the Caniçal tunnel. Horários do Funchal route 113 serves Caniçal; the last bus back to Funchal leaves well before the night arraial ends, so drivers or a taxi are the realistic option for the evening.
- Parking: village parking fills hours before the sea procession. Arrive by late morning, or park near the Museu da Baleia / Zona Franca side and walk in.
- Exact hour-by-hour programme: published by the Caniçal parish and Junta de Freguesia in the first half of September each year; the weekend itself does not move.
- 2026 note: local press (DNoticias) reported that almost 2,000 kg of seized dried skipjack tuna, gaiado, the salted fish served at the arraial, was released back to the Caniçal fishermen in time for the festival.
