About Madeira Carnival
Madeira Carnival is the island's Rio moment, smaller, cheekier, and with better food. The samba schools rehearse in Funchal for months, and the two big nights (allegorical parade and slapstick trapalhão) frame a week of neighbourhood parties that most visitors never plan for and remember longest.
Funchal's hotels release Carnival packages around September, the parade-view rooms disappear first. Independent guesthouses in the old town are cheaper and, honestly, better placed for the after-parties, which is where the week actually happens.
Carnival is the first big event in Madeira's calendar. Every municipality in the archipelago holds small parades and themed parties, and everyone wears a costume.
The season starts on the Wednesday before Entrudo (Shrove Tuesday) and carries on until the Enterro do Osso (Burial of the Bone) on the Saturday after Carnival Day. For 2027 the Madeira Tourism Board lists 3 to 14 February.
The highlight is the main parade through the streets of Funchal, with samba groups in magnificent, colourful dance costumes: a real show of light, colour and music that thousands come to watch. In 2027, for the first time, there are two main parades, on Friday 5 and Saturday 6 February.
On Tuesday afternoon comes the Cortejo Trapalhão, a parade built on comedy and satire that anyone is free to join. Just make sure you wear a good disguise.
What to know before you go
- Accommodation in central Funchal sells out earliest, booking 3–6 months ahead is normal for the larger festivals.
- Public transport runs extra services on the main event days, but parking near Funchal becomes very limited, arrive early or plan to walk in.
- Street programming is free. Paid elements, grandstand seats, gala dinners, indoor concerts, release in waves and disappear quickly once the dates are official.
- Photograph early. The best light and the smallest crowds are usually in the first hour of the programme, not the headline slot.
