About Funchal Marathon
Funchal Marathon is the January fixture Funchal's sport calendar is built around. Expect road closures, a festival village at the finish, and the usual mix of elite entries and locals doing it for the T-shirt.
Register well in advance if you plan to run or ride, and expect Funchal's hotels to prioritise team blocks in the week of the event. Spectators have an easier time — the finish area is the place to be.
What to know before you go
- Accommodation in central Funchal sells out earliest — booking 3–6 months ahead is normal for the larger festivals.
- Expect road closures near the venue and reduced parking in Funchal. The extra bus services are the easiest way in; taxis get scarce once the crowd builds.
