Frequently asked

Do I need a tour, or can I do Madeira self-guided?

With a hire car you can self-guide nearly everything. Tours earn their keep for the levadas (transport between trailheads is awkward solo), whale watching (boat-only), and Pico do Arieiro sunrise (driving in the dark on mountain roads). See our car hire guide for the trade-offs.

When should I book Madeira tours?

1–2 weeks ahead in shoulder season (Apr–May, Sep–Oct) is fine. For July–August, Christmas/New Year and Easter, book 4–6 weeks ahead — popular operators sell out.

Are the cheap tours worth it?

The €15–25 'free walking tours' of Funchal are generous-tip-expected, not actually free. For the rest, price tracks group size and pickup logistics. We avoid recommending operators with no recent reviews regardless of price.

What about PR trail booking fees on guided hikes?

Since 1 Jan 2026 every IFCN-classified PR trail requires a paid timed-slot booking (€4.50 standard, €10.50 for PR1). Reputable guided-hike operators include this in their price — confirm it's bundled before you book.
