How eating in Porto da Cruz works
The village sits under Penha de Águia, the huge eagle rock, with black-sand and rock pools below and the last working sugar-cane rum distillery on the island in the middle of it. That distillery is why the poncha here is taken seriously.
Most people arrive on foot off the Larano walk or by car on the north-coast road from Machico. Kitchens run to walker hours: solid lunch service, earlier dinner than the south coast.
- Parking is easiest by the sea pools; the village square fills at lunchtime.
