The harbour and the Churchill connection
The horseshoe-shaped harbour is the whole reason to come — wooden xavelha boats hauled up on the pebbles, blue and yellow paintwork, nets drying on the seawall. Winston Churchill painted it in 1950 during a stay at Reid's Palace; a small plaque on the upper road marks his vantage point. The view is essentially unchanged.
Poncha and lunch
The original poncha pescador — sugar-cane rum, honey, lemon juice, muddled with a wooden caralhinho — was invented here for fishermen returning at dawn. A handful of small bars on the harbour will mix one in front of you for €2–3. For lunch, the seafood restaurants on Rua São João de Deus serve grilled lapas (limpets) and the local peixe-espada com banana.
Above the harbour
A 10-minute uphill walk takes you to the Capela de Nossa Senhora da Conceição, with azulejo tilework telling the story of the founding of the village (the name means 'chamber of seals' — monk seals once bred in the cove). Continue up to the Pico da Torre miradouro for the full bay view, or drive 15 minutes to Cabo Girão for the cliff.
Best time to visit
Late afternoon. The fishing fleet comes in, the harbour fills with activity, and the western light hits the boats. Sunday mornings are quiet and good for walking but most of the village is closed. Avoid midday in summer — tour buses arrive from cruise ships and the harbour-side cafés are jammed.
Where to stay nearby
Câmara de Lobos is a calmer base than Funchal and 15 minutes closer to the south-west coast. We list holiday apartments in Câmara de Lobos with harbour and Cabo Girão views.
Common questions
Is Câmara de Lobos worth visiting?
Yes — it's the most photogenic working harbour on the island and a 15-minute drive from Funchal. Combine it with Cabo Girão for a half-day. Skip if you only have one day on the island.
Where did Churchill paint in Câmara de Lobos?
A small plaque marks the spot above the harbour where Winston Churchill set up his easel in 1950. The view of the boats is essentially unchanged. There's also a Churchill restaurant nearby that leans into the connection.
Is poncha really from Câmara de Lobos?
Yes — the original 'poncha pescador' (fisherman's poncha: rum, honey, lemon) is the village's drink. Several bars on the harbour will mix it in front of you with a wooden caralhinho stirrer.
Can you walk from Câmara de Lobos to Cabo Girão?
Not directly — it's a steep 8 km climb on roads. Drive (15 min), take a taxi, or use bus 7. Better as separate stops on the same day.
