Where to eat in Machico, Madeira
Machico eats around its bay. Mercado Velho occupies the converted old market building with a terrace under the trees, while Restaurante Marisqueira O Pescador faces the beach and serves Portuguese fish and seafood. Dinner with wine runs €18–€28 a head, kitchens close earlier than Funchal, 22:00 is late here, and almost everywhere shuts one day a week.

Restaurants
- Mercado Velho
Machico's best-known restaurant, open since 1972 in the town's old market building. Portuguese and international cooking served in a walled garden with a fountain and a large shaded esplanade, a minute from the beach.
Wednesday–Monday 12:00–20:00. Closed Tuesday.
- Restaurante Marisqueira O Pescador
Seafood restaurant facing Machico beach, with a long dining room overlooking the seafront and prominent O Pescador signage. The entrance is beside the large blue anchor on the beach side of the building.
Cafés and pastelarias
- As Galerias Café
Café inside La Barca Galerias, a small shopping gallery that opened in Machico on 29 September 2026 in the building that used to house the old La Barca nightclub. The gallery now holds a hairdresser, beauticians, a barber, an insurance broker and this café, with more units still to let. The café itself serves tostas on homemade bread with the house sauce, torradas, natural fruit smoothies made with fresh fruit, pastéis de natas, queijadas and a cake of the day, and stocks a small shelf of crisps and soft drinks too.
Bars and poncha
- Tasquinha "O Salsa"
Little poncha bar in old Machico, in the yellow-and-brown row on Rua da Banda d'Além, with wooden bench tables in the lane under a big awning and festival bunting overhead. Four ponchas on the board (regional, passion fruit, pescador and pé de cabra), plus sangria, nikita and cold beer, with cheap toasties and sandwiches to soak it up: carne de vinho e alhos, squid, tuna and gaiado seco. You order at the counter.

How eating in Machico
Machico is Madeira's second town and one of its earliest settlements, 20 minutes east of Funchal and five minutes from the airport. That airport proximity shapes the food: a lot of visitors eat one meal here on the way in or out, so the promenade restaurants turn over fast and the better cooking sits a street back from the water.
The imported yellow-sand beach and the marina fill the seafront in summer. In winter the town belongs to locals again and several kitchens drop to a shorter week, always worth a phone call in January and February.
- Parking is free along the riverbed and behind the market building; the seafront spaces fill by 12:30 in summer.
- Lunch runs 12:00–15:00, dinner 19:00–22:00. Last orders are genuinely earlier than in Funchal.
- Machico is the best-value espetada and grilled-limpet stop on the east coast, you pay Funchal prices minus about 20%.
- The bus to Funchal (SAM lines 20, 23, 53, 78) runs late enough for dinner but check the last departure before you order dessert.
