Machico's best-known restaurant, open since 1972 in the town's old market building. Portuguese and international cooking served in a walled garden with a fountain and a large shaded esplanade, a minute from the beach.
- Blue
Big, rustic grill house in Machico specialising in charcoal cooking — the charcoal-grilled bacalhau and the grilled chicken are what people come for. Covered esplanade, private parking and generous portions at local prices.
- O Gonçalves
Modern, comfortable Machico restaurant with a good terrace, open from breakfast through to late. Regional Madeiran cooking with a strong shellfish and fish side, and a menu priced for locals rather than cruise days.
How eating in Machico works
Machico is Madeira's second town and the island's first capital, 20 minutes east of Funchal and five minutes from the airport. That airport proximity shapes the food: a lot of visitors eat one meal here on the way in or out, so the promenade restaurants turn over fast and the better cooking sits a street back from the water.
The imported yellow-sand beach and the marina fill the seafront in summer. In winter the town belongs to locals again and several kitchens drop to a shorter week — always worth a phone call in January and February.
- Parking is free along the riverbed and behind the market building; the seafront spaces fill by 12:30 in summer.
- Lunch runs 12:00–15:00, dinner 19:00–22:00. Last orders are genuinely earlier than in Funchal.
- Machico is the best-value espetada and grilled-limpet stop on the east coast — you pay Funchal prices minus about 20%.
- The bus to Funchal (SAM lines 20, 23, 53, 78) runs late enough for dinner but check the last departure before you order dessert.
