Bar Rodrigues is a traditional poncha bar in Caniço de Baixo

Poncha is Madeira's traditional drink, white sugar-cane rum (aguardente), bee honey and fresh lemon, shaken by hand with a wooden mexelote. Order a copo and pace yourself; the second one always tastes like a good idea.

What to know before you go

  • There's no real bar cluster around here, so plan to drive or taxi in and out rather than hopping between venues.
  • Parking: on-street in the blue bays, paid Monday–Friday 08:00–19:00 and Saturday 08:00–14:00; free on Sundays and public holidays. €0.40/hour (15 min €0.10, 11-hour maximum €4.40). Checked at the meter, September 2026.

Best time to visit

Year-round. Funchal nightlife is most lively Thursday through Saturday; Sunday and Monday are quietest.
