What you're looking at
São Roque is a residential hillside north of the city centre, and the camera looks south from there straight down over Funchal to the sea. The frame takes in the cathedral tower and old town on the left, Santa Catarina park and the harbour in the middle, and the hotel zone stretching west towards the Lido. Because the camera is above the rooftops but below the mountain cloud line, it gives the best sense of the layered geography that a street-level camera cannot show.
Best time to check this camera
Use this one when you want to know whether the cloud is sitting on the city or above it. On a typical summer day the view is crisp until late morning, then a soft haze forms over the bay. It is one of the best, because the elevated angle shows both the coastline and the cloud line on the hills behind the city in a single frame.
