The camera is mounted on the Ritz Madeira Café terrace and looks straight down Avenida Arriaga, the tree-lined boulevard that runs from the Sé cathedral end of town up towards Santa Catarina park. In frame you get the jacaranda avenue, the pavement cafés, the municipal gardens on one side and the flow of pedestrians and buses along the road. This is the stage for almost every big public event in Funchal: the Carnival parade route, the Flower Festival cortege, the Madeira Wine Festival stalls, the Christmas lights switch-on and the street concerts that run through the Atlantic Festival in June.
