What you're looking at
The camera sits out on the Pontinha breakwater and looks back north across the water at the full sweep of Funchal, so you get the city stacked up the amphitheatre of hills rather than the usual view out to sea. In the foreground is the cruise berth and the working harbour; behind it the Avenida do Mar seafront, the cathedral quarter and the terraced suburbs climbing towards Monte and the Botanical Garden. On the left edge the coastline runs west towards Câmara de Lobos, and the ridge line along the top of frame is where the island's cloud usually parks itself.
Best time to check this camera
Early morning, roughly 06:00-09:00 local time, is when cruise ships slide into the berth in front of the camera, and it is also when Funchal is most likely to be clear. Afternoon cloud tends to build over the hills behind the city from about 14:00 in summer, so if you are judging the light for photographs, look before lunch or wait for the last hour before sunset, when the whole amphitheatre turns amber. In winter, this is the best single camera for checking whether a southerly swell is breaking against the harbour wall.
Is Funchal clear, and how busy is town today?
- If the view is clear:
- Good light for the old town, the cable car to Monte and a harbour-side dinner.
- If it's grey or rough:
- Head west to Ponta do Sol or Calheta, which usually keep the sun.

Questions about this camera
What does the Funchal harbour webcam show?
It shows a wide live view north from the Pontinha breakwater over Funchal bay: the cruise berth and working harbour in the foreground, the Avenida do Mar seafront and city centre behind it, and the hillside suburbs rising towards Monte. It is the clearest public camera for seeing which cruise ships are in port and what the light and cloud are doing over the city.
Can I see cruise ships on the Funchal webcam?
Yes. The cruise berth is directly in shot, so any ship alongside is visible from the camera, usually from early morning until departure in the late afternoon or evening. For a closer view along the quay and the Avenida do Mar, the Funchal Marina camera frames the same harbour from the opposite side.
