Madeira Botanical Garden (Jardim Botânico)

The botanical garden sits 300 m above Funchal in the former estate of the Reid family. 35,000 m² of terraced gardens, 2,500-plus plant species from every continent, a small tropical bird park, and a cable car link across the valley to Monte — making it the centrepiece of the classic Funchal day loop.

Three ways to get there

Cable car (recommended). The Botanical Garden cable car runs from Almirante Reis at the eastern end of Funchal old town directly up to the garden gate. Nine minutes each way, dramatic ride over the Ribeira de João Gomes valley. Separate from the better-known Monte cable car.

Car. Follow signs to Bom Sucesso / Jardim Botânico. Paid car park at the gate, usually space. About 15 minutes uphill from the centre.

Bus. Horários do Funchal lines 29, 30 and 31 stop near the entrance. Cheap but slow.

What to see inside

The garden is organised in themed terraces: succulents and cacti on the upper south-facing slope, a formal geometric parterre (the photo everyone takes), the indigenous Macaronesian collection, a small palaeontology display, and a separate ticketed tropical bird park (Jardim dos Loiros) at the lower end. The viewpoint over Funchal from the main lawn is one of the best in the city.

Best time to visit

Morning, ideally arriving on the first cable car at 09:00 — the light hits the geometric parterre perfectly and the upper terraces are still cool. By midday the sun is harsh on the cactus terrace and cruise-ship tours arrive. Spring (Mar–May) has the best flowering; autumn brings the bird-of-paradise and aloe blooms.

The Monte loop

Most visitors combine the garden with Monte using the second cable car. The full loop: Funchal → Monte cable car up → walk Monte (church, gardens, traditional wicker toboggan ride down) → take the Monte–Botanical Garden cable car across the valley → visit the garden → ride the Botanical Garden cable car back to Funchal. Allow a full day, buy a combined ticket at the lower station.

Where to stay nearby

Staying in central Funchal puts both cable car bases within walking distance. We list Funchal holiday apartments near Almirante Reis and the old town.

Common questions

How much does the Madeira Botanical Garden cost?

Around €7.50 for adults; under-12s free with an adult. The cable car (Funchal–Botanical Garden or Botanical Garden–Monte) is a separate ticket.

How do you get to the botanical garden from Funchal?

The most scenic option is the dedicated cable car from Almirante Reis (city centre) directly to the garden — about 9 minutes each way. By bus, lines 29, 30 and 31 stop nearby. By car, follow signs to Bom Sucesso; there's a paid car park at the entrance.

Can you combine the garden with Monte?

Yes, this is the classic loop: Funchal cable car up to Monte → walk down through Monte → second cable car across to the botanical garden → cable car down to Funchal. Allow a full day.

How long do you need at the garden?

2–3 hours is comfortable. The terraced layout means a fair bit of climbing on paths and stairs; wear proper shoes and bring water.
