Open on a Sunday in Madeira: Restaurants and Bars That Actually Serve

Chef Octávio Freitas's restaurant at Socalco Nature Hotel in Calheta, known above all for its own gardens: much of what lands on the plate is grown on the property, with the rest from local producers and fish from the Madeira coast. There is no fixed menu. The kitchen works by inspiration around a Season's menu built on whatever the gardens are producing, and it is open to the dining room, so you watch the team cook. The five-course tasting menu was €75 per person on Mike McCabe's October 2026 visit; his table paid €40 for wine and €210 in total, including extra bread and water. Those are prices paid on that visit, not a current menu promise.

Indian, Japanese and Nepalese food on Calheta marina, with curries and sushi offering a change from the seafront grills. Portuguese restaurant with a covered marina terrace. The supplied menu includes black scabbardfish with banana, tuna steak, espetada, octopus, pasta and risotto, with vegetarian dishes too. On Saturday evening, 17 October 2026, Mike McCabe found it quieter than the neighbouring venues and felt the menu was a little more expensive. He did not report eating here. Open daily 11:00–22:00.

New seafood restaurant right on Funchal Marina, with a glass-fronted dining room under the promenade and a wooden deck over the water shaded by big cream parasols. Oysters, prawns and seafood platters sit alongside shellfish charcoal-grilled in a Josper oven, carabinero rice and a cervejaria-style steak. Open every day 11:00 to 23:00. We visited on 13 October 2026.

Brunch restaurant and bar in the renovated commercial area of Funchal Marina, next door to Latitude 32°, with a deck over the water under yellow parasols. The menu seen in September 2026 listed brunch plates, bowls, bagels, pancakes, waffles and soft tacos, mostly €15–19.50, plus cocktails; live music or a DJ on Saturdays.

Japanese restaurant on Estrada Monumental in São Martinho, Funchal, with some Chinese classics on the menu too. You choose between all-you-can-eat and à la carte. We ate here on 30 September 2026: great food and very good value for money.

Classic Portuguese restaurant on the old square in the centre of Porto da Cruz, a short walk from the seafront. Known for generous plates of octopus, monkfish, espetada and home-style Madeiran cooking, with views towards the sea and Penha de Águia.

Easy-going restaurant and café a few steps from the seafront in Santa Cruz, serving generous, honest Madeiran cooking at fair prices. Set menu or à la carte, a sunny outdoor terrace, air-conditioned rooms inside, free Wi-Fi, a children's area and takeaway.

Simple, family-run spot right on Santa Cruz's main square, with a small terrace under the trees. Snacks, prego rolls, grilled fish and shellfish at local prices, the kind of place regulars use for lunch rather than a tourist night out.

Small, casual kitchen on Rua da Praia in Santa Cruz doing quick, home-style plates and takeaway. Popular with locals for a fast, cheap lunch between the square and the beach; service can be hit and miss when it's busy.

Machico's best-known restaurant, open since 1972 in the town's old market building. Portuguese and international cooking served in a walled garden with a fountain and a large shaded esplanade, a minute from the beach.

Unfussy fish and seafood restaurant on Estrada do Cristo Rei at Garajau, a short walk from the Cristo Rei statue and viewpoint. Grilled fish of the day, big garlic prawns and limpets served on a thatched, sea-facing terrace looking over the Garajau marine reserve. Open every day, 10:00 to 20:00.

Waterfront cocktail and snack bar in the renovated commercial area of Funchal Marina, with terrace tables right on the pontoons among the moored yachts and boats. Sandwiches, snacks, omelettes, desserts and ice cream alongside cocktails; one of the first venues to open in the new marina area.

Clifftop cocktail lounge at the Sentido Galomar hotel in Caniço de Baixo, rooftop and terrace seating straight over the Atlantic at Lido Galomar, cocktails, light bites and one of the best sunset views on this stretch of coast.

No-frills poncha bar in Caniço where the drinks are shaken by hand at the counter, traditional lemon and honey plus fruit versions, cheap petiscos and a mixed crowd of locals and residents. The back room is built into the rock, with barrels and a cave-like bar.

Sister bar to Peter's Poncha in Caniço de Baixo, this roadside poncha stop sits on the ER101 at Sítio da Degolada / Lombo de Baixo in Faial, just by the new Faial bridge. Poncha regional and poncha à pescador shaken to order, plus fruit versions such as strawberry and tangerine, the natural pause on a north-coast drive between Santana and Machico.

Lively tapas-and-cocktails bar in Funchal Old Town, popular with locals well past midnight. Strong poncha, decent cocktails, big petiscos plates.

Open-air terrace bar set into the cliff below São Tiago fortress, hanging over the Atlantic at the east end of Funchal's seafront. Sunset drinks, occasional DJ nights in summer.
