What to do in 2 to 8 hours ashore, from the seafront and Old Town to Monte and the island’s mountain views.
Funchal cruise port is about a 20-minute walk from the Old Town along a flat promenade. Stay in the centre for a short stop, add Monte with more time, or choose a pre-booked trip beyond Funchal. Always plan around your ship’s all-aboard time, not its departure time.

Four itineraries by time ashore
Match the route to your time ashore and leave room for the return. The Old Town is the simplest choice for a short stop.
Easy walk (2–3 h ashore)
Walk to Funchal Old Town (20 min), painted doors of Rua de Santa Maria, Workers' Market (Mercado dos Lavradores), poncha at a local tasca, walk back. €5 budget.
Classic Funchal (4 h)
Walk or taxi to the cable car (€22 return). 15-min ride to Monte. Monte Palace gardens (optional, €15) or straight to the toboggan (€30/person, 2 people). Taxi back to ship. Total ≈ 4 h, €40–€50.
Câmara de Lobos + Cabo Girão (5 h)
Pre-booked taxi or tour van. 25-min drive west to Câmara de Lobos fishing village (Churchill painted here). Continue to Cabo Girão Skywalk: Europe's highest sea cliff at 580 m, glass viewing platform. Lunch in Câmara de Lobos. Back on board with 2 h buffer. €60–€90/person on a shared tour.
Full-island east loop (7–8 h, tight)
Private driver: Pico do Areeiro (1,818 m) → Santana A-frame houses → Porto da Cruz tasting of poncha → Machico → back to port. Book a known operator; do not rely on a random taxi. €120–€180/person depending on group size.

Back on board, without the rush
Follow the all-aboard time given by your cruise line, which is earlier than the ship’s departure. Aim to return with at least a 1-hour buffer if you go outside Funchal, allowing more for longer trips, traffic and delays. Check that your phone and watch match ship time.
The wicker toboggan ends at Livramento, not at the cable car or the port. Include the return journey in your plan.

- How far is Funchal old town from the cruise port?
- About 1.2 km / about a 20-minute flat walk along the marina promenade. There are no shuttle buses needed for most ships, just turn left out of the terminal and follow the seafront.
- Is the wicker toboggan ride worth it?
- Yes, for the novelty. Two trained 'carreiros' push a wicker basket down a 2 km tarmac road from Monte to Livramento. It's safe (top speed ~ 30 km/h) and takes about 10 minutes. €30 per person for two riders sharing a basket, €45 if you ride solo. Note: it ends at Livramento, not back at the cable car, so factor in a €10 taxi back to the port.
- Can I do a full-island tour in one port day?
- Only the eastern half realistically. Pico do Areeiro + Santana + Machico fits in 7 hours. Doing Porto Moniz on the north-west and Pico do Areeiro in the same day is not safe with cruise timing, pick one side.
- What if my ship arrives in poor weather?
- Funchal stays at 18–25 °C year-round and rain showers are usually brief. The Monte cable car runs in light rain but closes in high winds (rare). Indoor backups: Madeira Story Centre, Blandy's Wine Lodge, CR7 Museum, the cathedral and the market.
- Are taxis safe and how much should I pay?
- Yes, Funchal taxis are metered, regulated and English-speaking. Cruise port to cable car ≈ €8. Cabo Girão return ≈ €60 with 30 min wait. A 4-hour custom tour: €100–€130 for the car. Always agree the price and route before getting in.
- What about back-on-board timing?
