About Sabor a Fado
Sabor a Fado is a mid-range portuguese and traditional restaurant in Funchal — Old Town
If you only order one thing, make it the live fado sung by the owners while you dine — it's what the kitchen is known for and what regulars come back for.
Fado is Portugal's great song tradition and a UNESCO-listed heritage, and Sabor a Fado is one of the very few places in Madeira where you can hear it live. What makes the room special is that the fadistas are the family who own and run the restaurant — the people serving your espetada and scabbard fish step between the tables and sing.
There are two easy ways to order. The Menu Sabor a Fado (€110 for two people) is a full evening: grilled chouriço, two soups, bolo do caco, espetada of beef or chicken (or scabbard fish with passionfruit or banana), house wine, dessert and a digestif. Lighter nights have the Menu 'Tapas' (€37): bolo do caco, grilled chouriço, a glass of red wine and fresh cheese with olives. À la carte runs from €8 starters to a €73 seafood caldeirada for the table; there is a minimum consumption of €30 per person.
The room is small and fills fast, especially in high season, so booking ahead by phone (+351 925 612 259) is strongly recommended. Expect generous portions and a night that runs late.
