Mezze Grill is a hidden gem just below Moynihan's Irish Bar, a short walk uphill from the centre of Funchal. Chef Orlando cooks in an open kitchen, so you can watch the chargrill at work while the staff, led by Albert and Jennifer, guide you through the menu and a well-chosen wine list.
Start with the cold mezze (€8.95, hummus, tzatziki, couscous, esme, Russian salad and fasulye with pitta and dips) or the hot mezze (€9.95, or €16.95 for two to share) with lamb kofta, chicken wings, pork ribs, samosa and falafel. Standalone starters run €4.50–€9.95, including grilled scallops with garlic butter (€9.95) and spring rolls or dumplings (€7.95).
Mains are €14.95–€21.95: chicken or beef shish kebab (€15.95), lamb chops (€18.95), lamb shawarma (€17.95), the mixed grill (€21.95), chargrilled dourada (€18.95) or salmon (€16.95), and strong vegan options, moussaka, mushroom shawarma and fattoush (all €14.95). The chef's special is a slow-cooked lamb shank with couscous, flatbread and potato wedges (€21.95). Desserts €4.95–€5.95: baklava, panna cotta, chocolate rum brownie.
