A Lareira sits on the square in front of the Caniço parish church, five minutes up from the resort strip at Caniço de Baixo. Its terrace is the best seat in the old town: growers set out trestle tables of bananas, oranges, mangoes and chillies under green parasols in front of it most mornings, and the kiosk café on the corner keeps the square busy with coffee and beer.
It is a working local restaurant rather than a tourist one, Madeiran staples, generous plates and prices to match. Time a visit with a weekday morning if you want the market in full swing; it winds down by lunchtime.
