About Garajau to Caniço de Baixo Coastal Walk

Garajau to Caniço de Baixo Coastal Walk sits in Caniço and is a moderately demanding hike — good fitness helps but no technical skills required. Over its 7 km point-to-point route, Garajau to Caniço de Baixo Coastal Walk climbs around 360 m of cumulative gain. Most walkers take between 3 and 4 hours, depending on pace and how often they stop for photos.

It packs a lot of variety into a relatively short distance, which is why it stays busy through the season. The route is part of Madeira's signed network of official PR ("Pequena Rota") trails. It sits outside the official PR network, so it is less obviously waymarked — bring a downloaded map and treat the route description as your primary source.

The Garajau to Caniço de Baixo coastal walk is a 7 km point-to-point along the cliff edge east of Funchal, starting at the Cristo Rei statue on Ponta do Garajau and finishing on the seafront at Caniço de Baixo. Around 360 m of cumulative gain, mostly on tarmac access roads and short cliff-top sections — comfortably done in trainers and 2.5 to 3 hours. The whole route is unclassified and free; no IFCN booking is required at any point.

Walk it east-to-west (Garajau → Caniço de Baixo) for a predominantly downhill day, with the option to detour down the 250 steps from the Cristo Rei statue to Praia do Garajau pebble beach. The Forte de São Sebastião at the Caniço end is the obvious finishing point — plenty of cafés on the seafront for a beer afterwards. Bus 155 connects Caniço back to Funchal every half-hour, which makes the logistics simple if you've parked at the Cristo Rei viewpoint car park. Best done outside the midday heat in summer — there's almost no shade on the road sections.

What to know before you go

  • Trail runners are fine on dry days; switch to grippy hiking boots if rain is forecast — wet basalt is unforgiving.
  • Bring more water than the distance suggests; the cumulative climb is what drains energy, not the kilometres.
  • A small head torch is useful in case the route enters any tunnel section.
  • Mid-morning is fine, but earlier starts mean clearer views and emptier paths.
  • Check the official 'Estado dos Trilhos' status before you go — trails close after storms or rockfalls.
  • Park free at the Cristo Rei viewpoint car park in Garajau.
  • Bus 155 from Caniço back to Funchal runs roughly every 30 minutes.
  • Mostly tarmac — trainers are fine, hiking boots overkill.
  • Almost no shade; start before 10:00 in summer and carry 1 L per person.
  • 250-step detour down to Praia do Garajau pebble beach if you want a swim at the midpoint.

Best time to visit

May, June, September and early October combine long daylight, stable weather and lower trail traffic. Winter is fine for the lower levadas but unreliable on the high ridges.
