- Day 2, Bus 021 or the cable car up to Monte, tropical gardens and the church terrace, toboggan for anyone 4+, taxi or cable car back down for naps by 14:00.
- Day 3, Bus 7 to Câmara de Lobos for the fishing harbour and lunch, then back for the Lido sea pools in the afternoon.
One week with primary-age kids (7 days, rental car)
- Day 1, Arrive, settle, Funchal seafront and Praia Formosa for a first swim.

FAQ: Madeira with kids
Is Madeira a good destination with a baby or toddler?
Yes. Mild weather, short flights from western Europe, no jet-lag, safe tap water and excellent healthcare. The main caveat is terrain, Funchal old town is steep and cobbled, so a baby carrier is far more useful than a buggy. The Lido promenade, Calheta and Porto Santo are buggy-friendly.
Are there sandy beaches in Madeira for kids?
Two: Calheta (imported Moroccan sand, calm bay, lifeguarded) and Machico (golden sand, town beach). Most other 'beaches' are black pebble or natural sea pools (Porto Moniz, Doca do Cavacas, Seixal). Porto Santo island, 2 h by ferry, has 9 km of golden sand and very shallow shelving sea, perfect for small children.
What about car seats?
Portuguese law requires car seats for children under 12 or shorter than 135 cm. Rental companies rent seats for ~€5–7/day. Pre-booked airport transfers will fit seats if requested; standard taxis usually will not, book private transfer if travelling with a baby.
Can older kids do levada walks?
Yes, start with Levada do Rei or the first hour of Caldeirão Verde (gentle, no exposed drops). Avoid 25 Fontes (long, narrow), Vereda do Larano (sheer cliffs) and the high-mountain Pico do Areeiro → Pico Ruivo route until kids are confident on exposed paths.
What about food, will fussy eaters cope?
Easily. Pizza, pasta, grilled chicken (frango), bolo do caco bread, banana, mango and passion-fruit ice cream are everywhere. Most Funchal restaurants have kids' menus and high-chairs; supermarkets stock major UK / EU baby brands.
Is the cable car safe for small children?
Yes, 15-minute glass gondola from Funchal to Monte, suitable for all ages. The toboggan ride back down is run by trained carreiros and is fine from about age 4 (younger kids sit on a parent's lap).
