Praia do Garajau is a small, sheltered pebble cove tucked beneath the Cristo Rei statue on the south-east coast of Madeira, just below the cliff-top car park in Garajau. The beach sits inside the Garajau Marine Reserve (Reserva Natural Parcial do Mar de Garajau), which protects the clear water and the rocky reefs just offshore, the snorkelling here is some of the easiest and most rewarding on the south coast.
There is no road to the beach itself; most visitors take the cable car from the cliff top, although a steep footpath also zig-zags down through the vegetation. The pebbles shelve fairly steeply into the water, so it is not ideal for very small children, but the protected bay and lack of surf make it calmer and clearer than many Atlantic beaches. Look out for parrotfish, damselfish and the occasional octopus among the rocks.
Facilities are simple: a small seasonal cafe for snacks and drinks, plus showers near the cable-car station and a lifeguard during the summer bathing season. The location is perfect for combining with the Cristo Rei viewpoint above, the 360° view across Funchal bay and the Desertas Islands is one of the best on this side of the island.
