What you're looking at
The camera looks out over the Rabaçal plateau at around 1,300 metres, the high ground above the 25 Fontes and Levada do Risco walks in the Paul da Serra area. The frame is mostly open moorland, wind-bent heather and the road down to the trailhead, with the laurel forest valley dropping away beyond. There are no buildings and no coastline here, which is precisely the point: it is a pure weather camera for the island's interior.
Best time to check this camera
Check it before you leave for a levada walk, ideally between 07:00 and 09:00, because Rabaçal clouds in more often and more suddenly than anywhere else on the island. A clear frame in the morning usually holds for a few hours; a white frame means mist on the trail with visibility of a few metres and slippery rock. Winter brings occasional snow to this plateau, which shows up plainly in the feed and is the only reliable public way to check it.

Yes — it is the single most useful pre-hike check on the island. Rabaçal is the trailhead plateau for both 25 Fontes and Levada do Risco, and if the camera shows dense mist the walk will be a slippery white-out with no views. A clear morning frame is the best signal that conditions on the trail are good.
Does it snow at Rabaçal?
Occasionally in winter, usually in January and February, when cold air reaches the Paul da Serra plateau above roughly 1,200 metres. Snow is visible on this camera when it happens, and it typically closes the access road to the trailhead for a day or two.
