What you’re looking at

Seixal sits on the wildest stretch of Madeira's north coast and the camera shows why: black volcanic sand, natural rock pools cut into the lava shelf and near-vertical green cliffs with waterfalls dropping straight onto the shore. In frame you can usually pick out the small harbour, the bathing area and the surf line where Atlantic swell meets the rocks. The vegetation here is startlingly dense compared with the sunburnt south coast, because this side of the island catches most of the rain.

Best time to check this camera

Look in the morning. The north coast clears less often than the south, and when it does it is usually before midday; by afternoon the cloud that sits against the mountains tends to spill down over Seixal. Check the surf line before driving over for the natural pools, a heavy north swell closes them, and you will see it plainly here as white water washing across the shelf. After a wet spell the cliff waterfalls in frame run hard, which is the best time to visit for photographs.

Are the Seixal natural pools swimmable today?

The camera is the quickest way to judge. If the sea is glassy and the lava shelf is dry between sets, the pools are usually calm enough to swim; if white water is sweeping across the rocks the pools are unsafe and are often closed. North-coast swell can change within hours, so check the feed shortly before you set out.

Why does Seixal look cloudier than the Funchal webcams?

Madeira's mountain spine forces moist north-easterly air upwards, so cloud and rain concentrate on the north coast while Funchal stays sunny on the sheltered southern side. It is completely normal for the Seixal feed to be grey while the Funchal and Ponta do Sol cameras show blue sky.
