Pico do Arieiro: Above the Clouds

Live view from the summit of Pico do Arieiro (1,818 m), Madeira's third-highest peak. The quickest way to see whether the summit sits above a sea of cloud before a sunrise drive or the PR1 ridge walk to Pico Ruivo.

What you’re looking at

The camera sits at the top of Pico do Arieiro, 1,818 metres up and reachable by road, looking across the jagged volcanic ridges of the central massif. On the best mornings the peaks stand out of a flat white sea of cloud that covers everything below about 1,500 metres. On bad days the frame is a wall of grey. At night, the lights on the ridge and the faint glow of the coast show when the sky is clear.

Best time to check this camera

Check it before you leave for sunrise, ideally an hour before setting off, because the drive up from Funchal takes around 40 minutes. A sharp frame with cloud below means the classic above-the-clouds sunrise. Check again before the PR1 ridge walk to Pico Ruivo, which is exposed and cold when cloud blows across the summit. Winter can bring frost and occasional snow, which close the road.

Is the summit above the cloud, or stuck inside it?

If the view is clear:
Go: sunrise over a sea of cloud, then the PR1 ridge towards Pico Ruivo if it is open.
If it’s grey or rough:
A white frame means fog and cold on top; save the drive and try Achada do Teixeira or the coast.

Questions about this camera

How do I know if Pico do Arieiro is above the clouds right now?
Look at this camera. If the peaks are sharp and a flat layer of white sits below them, the summit is above the cloud. If the frame is grey or blank white, the top is inside the cloud and there will be no view. The picture is live, so you see conditions as they are now.
Can I watch the Pico do Arieiro webcam live?
Yes, the live picture plays on this page. If it is unavailable, the operator's page has a still image that refreshes every few minutes, which is enough to judge cloud and light before you drive up.
