Vereda dos Balcões
Short, mostly flat levada walk from Ribeiro Frio to the Balcões viewpoint — panoramic balcony over the central massif.
About Vereda dos Balcões
Vereda dos Balcões sits in the lush, north-facing slopes around Santana and is an accessible walk suitable for most fitness levels. Over its 3 km point-to-point route, Vereda dos Balcões climbs around 50 m of cumulative gain. Most walkers take between 1 and 3 hours, depending on pace and how often they stop for photos.
It packs a lot of variety into a relatively short distance, which is why it stays busy through the season. The route is part of Madeira's signed network of official PR ("Pequena Rota") trails, catalogued as PR11. The PR sign at the trailhead is your reassurance, not a promise — weather on the central ridge can shift inside an hour.
Vereda dos Balcões (PR11) is the easiest of the famous Madeira trails — a near-flat 1.5 km out from Ribeiro Frio through laurisilva to a basalt promontory looking straight at the central peaks of Pico do Areeiro, Pico das Torres and Pico Ruivo. The path follows the Levada da Serra do Faial through dense laurel forest before opening at the Balcões ("balconies") viewpoint. Total return distance is around 3 km with negligible elevation change; allow 60 minutes plus time at the viewpoint.
From 2026 the trail is part of the IFCN Simplifica paid network — a timed ticket (€3) must be booked online before you arrive at Ribeiro Frio. The combination of low effort and a headline view means it gets very busy between 10:00 and 15:00; book the earliest slot of the day, or the last slot after 16:00 for the best light on the peaks. Combine with the trout farm and Faísca restaurant in Ribeiro Frio village for a tidy half-day from Funchal.
What to know before you go
- Wear proper hiking shoes with grip — basalt gets slippery when damp, and most levada paths have a drop on one side.
- Pack two litres of water per person — there are no refill points on the route — and a light fleece for the ridge wind.
- A small head torch is useful in case the route enters any tunnel section.
- Mid-morning is fine, but earlier starts mean clearer views and emptier paths.
- Check the official 'Estado dos Trilhos' status before you go — trails close after storms or rockfalls.
- Book a timed Simplifica ticket online before arriving — no walk-up entry from 2026.
- Park in Ribeiro Frio village (free, limited spaces) or take SIGA bus 103 from Funchal.
- Trailhead is signed from the main ER103 road opposite the trout farm.
- Concrete and dirt levada path — trainers are fine, no boots needed.
- Best light on the central peaks is early morning or after 16:00; midday is hazy and crowded.
- Combine with the free Ribeiro Frio trout farm and Faísca restaurant for a half-day.
Best time to visit
May, June, September and early October combine long daylight, stable weather and lower trail traffic. Winter is fine for the lower levadas but unreliable on the high ridges.
