About Paul do Mar (Parish)
Paul do Mar (Parish) is part of the municipality of Calheta, with a population of around 635
Paul do Mar (Parish) sits where terraced banana plantations and sunny south-facing cliffs meet the sea, which shapes its layout and its everyday rhythm: fishing, agriculture, and increasingly tourism. Spending half a day here gives a much better feel for the island than only visiting Funchal.
Paul do Mar is a small parish in the Calheta municipality: a narrow strip of houses, banana plots and seafront squeezed between the Atlantic and cliffs several hundred metres high. It covers 1.4 km² and had 635 residents at the 2021 census. The name comes from the lie of the land: a low, sheltered strip under tall rocks by the sea.
Fishing has shaped the village for centuries and it is still one of the island's fishing centres, so fish is what the seafront restaurants are known for. In 1912 a tuna cannery was built at Sítio da Lagoa, cooking the catch in olive oil for export; its chimney, now built into a block of flats, is all that remains. West of the pier, the three-metre statue of the Homem do Mar (Man of the Sea), unveiled in 2004, honours the parish's fishermen.
The parish church is dedicated to Santo Amaro. Paul do Mar became a parish in its own right in 1676, around a small chapel founded by the early settler João Anes do Couto; the old church was demolished in 1974 and the present one built in its place.
For surfers, Paul do Mar means a long, powerful left-hand reef that works in big winter swells, a wave for experienced surfers only, with a rocky entry. Jardim do Mar's right-hand reef is next door. On calm days, people swim off the pier, walk the promenade and wait for sunset at the seafront bars, Maktub being the best known.
Two roads reach the village, and the views from the cliff road above take in the whole strip of houses, the football pitch and the coast running towards Jardim do Mar. For shops and services beyond the basics, Calheta town is about 8.5 km away.
What to know before you go
- Most cafés, bakeries and family-run restaurants take cards; small village shops sometimes still prefer cash for under €5.
- Buses run a handful of times a day on the north and west coasts, a rental car removes the timetable problem entirely.
- Old-town streets are tight and one-way; use the signed car parks on the outskirts and walk the last few minutes in.
Best time to visit
Visit any month; locals consider May, June and September the sweet spot, long daylight, settled weather and fewer cruise-ship crowds.
