Funchal sits in a natural amphitheatre, the city climbs steeply from the harbour toward the central mountains, which means almost any bar above the third floor has a view. The best rooftops face south or south-west: the harbour at sunset, the cruise ships lit at night, and the Câmara de Lobos cliffs in the distance.
The scene splits into two: established hotel rooftops (consistent, well-priced cocktails, dressier crowd) and a small handful of independent terrace bars in the Old Town and around Forte de São Tiago. Both work, pick the hotel rooftops for sunset and the independents for a longer night.

Practical notes
- Sunset is the prime hour, arrive 45 minutes before to claim a railing seat (around 18:00 in winter, 21:00 in midsummer).
- Cocktails sit at €8–12, slightly above ground-level bars; you're paying for the view.
- Hotel rooftops are open to non-guests but ask at reception or take the dedicated lift to avoid confusion.
- Wind picks up after dark on the exposed terraces, bring a light layer even in summer.
