Praia Formosa
Madeira's longest beach: a mix of pebble and black sand on the western edge of Funchal. Easy to reach by bus.
About Praia Formosa
Praia Formosa sits in the sunlit south coast around Funchal and is best known for rounded pebbles rather than soft sand — water shoes make a real difference
Seasonal lifeguards cover the busiest hours; flags drop early if the swell turns and the pool gets closed for safety. On-site facilities include lifeguard, showers, cafe and parking.
Praia Formosa is the longest beach in Madeira and the closest real swimming beach to central Funchal — a 15-minute bus ride or a flat 4 km walk along the seafront promenade. It is a mixed pebble-and-black-sand beach split into four sections by short basalt headlands; the central sections have showers, lifeguards in season, and chiringuito-style bars.
Locals use it as the de-facto Funchal beach for sunset swims and weekend grilling. Tourists often skip it for the imported sand of Calheta or Machico, which is a mistake — the swim conditions are usually better and parking is far easier.
What to know before you go
- Madeira's water is cooler than the Canaries — sea-surface temperatures sit around 19–23 °C through the year.
- Bring water shoes; entry is not soft-sand friendly.
- Cash is rarely required — cafés and parking meters mostly take cards.
- Parking fills early on summer weekends; arrive before 10:00 or after 16:00 for the best chance of a spot.
Best time to visit
June to October is peak season for swimming, with the warmest water in September. The site stays open year-round but the Atlantic gets bigger and colder from November.
