What you're looking at
This camera overlooks the bay of Machico, the island's first capital, framing the crescent of imported golden sand, the marina and the town rising into the valley behind. The two headlands enclosing the bay are visible on either side of the frame, and on clear days the Desertas islands appear as a low grey silhouette on the horizon to the south, with the Caniçal headland to the east. The gold beach is artificial — Moroccan sand laid over the original shingle — and it stands out sharply against Madeira's usual black volcanic shoreline.
Best time to check this camera
Mid-morning through early afternoon shows the beach at its busiest and the water at its clearest. For horizon visibility towards the Desertas, look early — haze builds through the day in summer. The bay is fairly sheltered, so if the water in this frame looks rough, conditions on the exposed east and north coasts will be considerably worse. Sunrise over the bay mouth is the standout light, since the camera faces south-east.

Yes. Machico has one of only a handful of golden-sand beaches on Madeira, created by importing sand from Morocco over the original pebble shore. The camera shows the full crescent, so you can see how busy it is and how clear the water looks before you go.
