About Pico do Facho Viewpoint Walk

Pico do Facho Viewpoint Walk sits in the dry, dramatic eastern tip of the island and is a moderately demanding hike — good fitness helps but no technical skills required. Over its 4 km point-to-point route, Pico do Facho Viewpoint Walk climbs around 320 m of cumulative gain. Most walkers take between 2 and 3 hours, depending on pace and how often they stop for photos.

It packs a lot of variety into a relatively short distance, which is why it stays busy through the season. The route is part of Madeira's signed network of official PR ("Pequena Rota") trails. It sits outside the official PR network, so it is less obviously waymarked — bring a downloaded map and treat the route description as your primary source.

Pico do Facho is the 322 m hill above Machico marina with one of the cleanest inland views of the Ponta de São Lourenço peninsula on the island. The walking route from the Machico waterfront climbs around 4 km return with roughly 320 m of gain, mostly on a tarmac access road — steep, exposed, no real difficulty beyond the climb itself. Most fit walkers reach the top in 45–60 minutes and back down in 30. You can drive almost the whole way to the viewpoint if you'd rather skip the walk; walking it makes for a better arrival, and the view from the summit is the same either way.

It also connects to the longer historic Vereda do Caniçal / Levada do Caniçal route — from the viewpoint you can drop east down the old whaling path toward Caniçal, finishing on the Praia da Ribeira de Natal beach for a one-way day of around 8 km. Best done on a clear morning before the eastern haze rolls in; aim to be at the summit by 09:30 in summer for the cleanest light on São Lourenço. Skip on red-wind days — the summit area is fully exposed and gusts are unpleasant.

What to know before you go

  • Wear proper hiking shoes with grip — basalt gets slippery when damp, and most levada paths have a drop on one side.
  • Pack two litres of water per person — there are no refill points on the route — and a light fleece for the ridge wind.
  • A small head torch is useful in case the route enters any tunnel section.
  • Mid-morning is fine, but earlier starts mean clearer views and emptier paths.
  • Check the official 'Estado dos Trilhos' status before you go — trails close after storms or rockfalls.
  • Free roadside parking at Machico marina or near the start of the access road.
  • Drive up to the summit car park if you only want the view — paved road all the way.
  • Exposed climb with no shade; carry 1 L of water in summer and start before 10:00.
  • Combine with Levada do Caniçal for a longer day finishing at Praia da Ribeira de Natal beach.
  • Skip on strong easterly wind days — the summit funnels gusts.

Best time to visit

October to May, when the eastern peninsula is mild rather than baking. Avoid midday in July and August — there is no shade.
