Levada do Caniçal sits in the dry, dramatic eastern tip of the island and is an accessible walk suitable for most fitness levels. Over its 11.6 km point-to-point route, Levada do Caniçal climbs around 150 m of cumulative gain. Most walkers take between 4 and 5 hours, depending on pace and how often they stop for photos.
Bring more water than you think you need and pace yourself — the second half is where most people struggle. The route is part of Madeira's signed network of official PR ("Pequena Rota") trails. It sits outside the official PR network, so it is less obviously waymarked — bring a downloaded map and treat the route description as your primary source.
Levada do Caniçal is the gentle option in eastern Madeira: a 5.2 km point-to-point along an old irrigation channel between Maroços and Caniçal, almost flat, taking around 2.5 hours at a relaxed pace. The path crosses small farming terraces — locals call them poios — where families still tend cabbages and sugar cane right next to the trail. There are open views over Machico valley and the Atlantic for most of the walk. Surface is dirt and stones; nothing technical, no exposed drops.
The natural extension turns it into an 11.1 km loop by descending into Caniçal village, walking along Praia da Calhau, then climbing the access road up to the Pico do Facho viewpoint and back across the levada. Pico do Facho is the panoramic finish — a 322 m hilltop with one of the cleanest views of the entire Ponta de São Lourenço peninsula from inland. The extension adds about 3 hours and turns an easy walk into a moderate day; the climb up to Pico do Facho is short but steep and exposed.
What to know before you go
- Wear proper hiking shoes with grip — basalt gets slippery when damp, and most levada paths have a drop on one side.
- Pack two litres of water per person — there are no refill points on the route — and a light fleece for the ridge wind.
- A small head torch is useful in case the route enters any tunnel section.
- Mid-morning is fine, but earlier starts mean clearer views and emptier paths.
- Check the official 'Estado dos Trilhos' status before you go — trails close after storms or rockfalls.
- Park at either end: Maroços church or near the old tunnel entrance in Machico. Free street parking.
- Bus 113 from Funchal runs to Caniçal (~€3.35, 1.5 hours) if doing it without a car.
- Trail shoes are fine in dry conditions; boots if recent rain has left mud.
- No water sources on the route — carry 1 L per person.
- If extending to Pico do Facho, add 1.5 hours and expect a steep exposed climb at the end.
Best time to visit
October to May, when the eastern peninsula is mild rather than baking. Avoid midday in July and August — there is no shade.
