How to get to Madeira: fly into Madeira Airport (FNC / LPMA, "Cristiano Ronaldo International"), 18 km east of Funchal. There is no ferry connection from mainland Portugal — all visitors arrive by air. Direct flights run year-round from Lisbon and Porto (TAP, easyJet, Ryanair, ~1h40), London, Manchester, Dublin, Paris, Frankfurt, Amsterdam and most major European hubs. A separate inter-island ferry (Lobo Marinho, ~2h15) connects Funchal to Porto Santo. From FNC, transfers to Funchal take 20–25 minutes by aerobus (€5), Bolt (€18–€28) or fixed-tariff taxi (€25–€35).

Getting to Funchal

Fixed-tariff taxi rank outside arrivals. Funchal centre ~€25–€30 (~€35 at night/weekends). Pay the driver directly.
- Aerobus (500 / 500R)
Direct shuttle from FNC to Funchal hotels (Lido, Sé, Old Town). €6.40 one-way on board, cash or card. Roughly every 60–90 minutes.
- Public bus (SIGA line 113)
Cheapest option (~€3.85). Runs to Funchal centre with stops along the way. Not luggage-friendly at peak times.
- Pre-booked private transfer
Typical published rates: Funchal €25–€40, Calheta €70–€90, Porto Moniz €100–€130. Cheaper than taxi for 3+ passengers with luggage.
- Rental car
All major rental desks are in the arrivals hall. Pickup lot is a 2-minute walk from the terminal. Drive into Funchal via VR1 in ~20 minutes.
