Miradouro da Rocha do Navio: viewpoint in Madeira

Miradouro da Rocha do Navio is a viewpoint in Santana.

Clifftop lookout above Santana on Madeira's north coast, gazing down on the Rocha do Navio marine nature reserve and the 94 m Ilhéu da Viúva sea stack. The reserve, created in 1997, takes its name from a Dutch ship wrecked here in the 19th century. A steep rock path and a five-minute farmers' cable car drop from here to the fajãs below.

About Miradouro da Rocha do Navio

Miradouro da Rocha do Navio is one of Madeira's signature miradouros

Miradouro da Rocha do Navio is close enough to sea level that the Atlantic horizon is the main event. On clear days the view stretches uninterrupted; on hazy days the light softens and the cliffs turn silver. Either way, sunrise and sunset are the reliable windows.

What to know before you go

  • Bring a windproof layer, even on warm days the exposed clifftops are noticeably cooler.
  • First light and the last hour of the day are when the cliffs colour up, middle of the day is the harshest window.
  • Parking is small at most miradouros; arrive early or be prepared to wait briefly for a spot.
  • Stay behind the railings, the cliffs are higher than they look.

Best time to visit

Year-round, but May, June, September and October combine the most settled weather with the best light. Avoid windy days for clifftop viewpoints.
