Cabo Girão: the glass skywalk over Europe's highest sea cliff

580 metres of vertical rock dropping straight into the Atlantic, with a glass-floored platform cantilevered out over the edge. It's free, it's a 15-minute drive from Funchal, and it's the single most photographed spot in Madeira — for good reason.

Getting there

From Funchal, take the VR1 west to exit 4 (Câmara de Lobos), then follow signs for "Cabo Girão" up to Rancho. The drive is 20 minutes. Bus 7 from Funchal stops at Rancho village, a 10-minute walk from the skywalk. Taxis from central Funchal run €15–20 one way; many drivers will wait 30 minutes for a small extra fee.

Parking

Large free car park 100 m from the skywalk entrance. It fills around 11:00 when cruise-ship tours arrive and stays full until 15:00. Arrive before 10:00 or after 16:00 and you'll have no problem.

The skywalk and the view

The platform is a small triangular extension with a glass floor — you can stand directly above the fajã farmland 580 m below. The view sweeps from Funchal in the east to the Ponta do Sol coastline in the west. The original viewpoint (without glass) is alongside and gives the cleaner photo of the cliff face itself.

Tip: photographs of people on the glass work best in landscape mode shot through the railing from the side platform — the front-on selfie loses the cliff.

The cable car down to the fajã

A small cable car (teleférico) descends 580 m to Fajã do Rancho, the strip of farmland at the base of the cliff. It's one of the steepest cable cars in Europe, runs roughly 08:00–19:00, and a return ticket is around €5. At the bottom there's a tiny black-pebble beach, a couple of allotments, and a fisherman's chapel. Allow 45 minutes round trip.

Best time to visit

Early morning (before 10:00) for soft light and empty platforms; late afternoon for warm light on the cliff face. Midday is harsh and busy with tours. On windy south-easterly days the skywalk closes temporarily — rare, but worth a quick check before driving across the island for it.

Where to stay nearby

Câmara de Lobos, 5 minutes downhill, is a quieter alternative to Funchal with the same access to the south coast. We list self-catering apartments in Câmara de Lobos with cliff or harbour views.

Common questions

Is Cabo Girão really the highest sea cliff in Europe?

It is the highest in Europe at 580 m (1,902 ft) — Norwegian fjord cliffs like Hornelen are taller but rise above water inside a fjord rather than directly above open sea. Local signage and tourism authorities use the 'highest in Europe' framing.

Is the glass floor safe?

Yes. The skywalk is a triangular glass platform installed in 2012, certified to hold well over its rated load. It's cleaned daily but expect a slightly scratched view — that's normal.

How much does it cost to visit?

The skywalk itself is free. The only paid option is the cable car (Rancho–Fajã do Rancho) that descends to the farming terraces at the base — a small return ticket.

How long do you need at Cabo Girão?

30–45 minutes covers the skywalk, the small chapel, and the viewpoint over Câmara de Lobos. Add 1 hour if you take the cable car down to the fajã and back.
