Surfing Porto da Cruz — quick intro
Madeira is a volcanic island in the middle of the North Atlantic, 800 km off the Moroccan coast. With deep water right up to the shoreline and exposure to long-period North Atlantic groundswells, it offers some of Europe's most powerful waves — and almost none of them are sand-bottom beach breaks. Porto da Cruz is a beach & reef on the north coast near Machico, and it sits firmly in that Madeiran tradition: rewarding on its day, unforgiving on the wrong one. Compare it with the rest of the island on the Madeira surf report.
When Porto da Cruz works
- Best season
- Year-round; best October to April
- Ideal swell
- N to NE, 1–2.5 m at 8–14 s
- Ideal wind
- Offshore from S / SW, under 15 kt
- Best tide window
- Mid tide on either push or drop
The beach break works through most of the tide. The right reef on the east side is best from low pushing to mid — at full high it backs off and the wave fattens. For a wind read before you drive over, check the live Santana weather page, or the island-wide Madeira weather by parish forecast.
Local tips
- Surf early — the NE trade wind typically picks up by midday and turns the beach onshore.
- Maktub Surf School and a couple of board-hire shacks operate from the seafront in summer.
- The right reef ('Maiata') is one of Madeira's most consistent waves but the take-off is over shallow rock — scout it on a low tide before paddling out.
- Wrap up the session at Engenhos do Norte for a freshly pressed sugarcane rum and a pastel.

FAQ
Is Porto da Cruz good for beginners?

When does Porto da Cruz work best?
Clean N–NE swells of 1.5–2 m with an early-morning offshore. Autumn (Sep–Nov) tends to deliver the most consistent windows.
