Pico do Arieiro + a flexible mountain morning

- Only walk the currently permitted PR1 section if IFCN lists it open and you hold the required timed booking.
- Have a late breakfast around Poiso or Ribeiro Frio, then keep the afternoon free for delays, rest or Funchal.
- Do not combine this morning with Porto Moniz: the west and north coast have their own days below.

Is 7 days enough for Madeira?
Yes — seven days covers every region of the island at a comfortable pace, with two flexible days for weather. Ten days lets you add Porto Santo overnight and more walks, but nothing essential is missed in a week.
Do I need a car for a 7-day Madeira itinerary?
For this version, yes. Trailheads, viewpoints and the north-coast villages have no practical bus service. If you would rather not drive, use the seven-day plan without a car, which swaps three days for guided tours.
What if the mountain weather is bad?
Re-order the week rather than cancelling. Check the webcams at 06:00 — if Pico do Arieiro is above the cloud, go that morning. Cloudy peaks usually mean a sunny north coast, so Porto Moniz, Seixal and São Vicente become the day instead.
Which walks need booking in advance?
