Calheta or Funchal — which is the better Madeira base?

The island's sunniest sandy beach on the south-west coast, against the capital an hour east.

Short answer

Funchal is the better base for most trips: it is central, walkable, full of restaurants and served by every bus line. Choose Calheta if you specifically want a golden-sand beach, the driest, sunniest corner of the island and a quiet, low-rise resort — but you will need a car, and Funchal, the airport and the eastern peninsula are all around an hour away.

FAQ

Is Calheta a good place to stay in Madeira?

It is if you want beach and sunshine and you have a car. Calheta has two golden-sand beaches, a marina and some of the island's driest weather, but it is 50–60 minutes from Funchal and around 1 h 10 m from the airport, with limited bus service and few restaurants outside the marina.

Is Calheta sunnier than Funchal?

Generally yes. The south-west coast sits in the lee of the mountains and sees less of the cloud that builds over Funchal in the afternoon, which is why the beach resorts were developed there.

How long does it take to drive from Calheta to Funchal?

About 50 to 60 minutes on the VE3 and VR1 expressways in normal traffic, longer in the Funchal rush hour.

Can you stay in Calheta without a car?

Not comfortably. Rodoeste buses to Funchal run only a few times a day and take well over an hour, and there is no practical public transport to the trailheads. Plan on hiring a car or booking transfers.
