Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço
The arid eastern peninsula. Volcanic colours, dramatic sea cliffs, almost no shade. A complete contrast to the green interior.
About Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço
Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço sits in the dry, dramatic eastern tip of the island and is a moderately demanding hike — good fitness helps but no technical skills required. Over its 8 km point-to-point route, Vereda da Ponta de São Lourenço climbs around 320 m of cumulative gain. Most walkers take between 3 and 4 hours, depending on pace and how often they stop for photos.
It packs a lot of variety into a relatively short distance, which is why it stays busy through the season. The route is part of Madeira's signed network of official PR ("Pequena Rota") trails, catalogued as PR8. The PR sign at the trailhead is your reassurance, not a promise — weather on the central ridge can shift inside an hour.
PR8 is the eastern peninsula trail and the visual opposite of Madeira's green interior: a dry, treeless basalt finger sticking 9 km into the Atlantic, with red-and-ochre cliffs, blue sea on both sides, and almost no shade for the full out-and-back. The trail is officially 8 km return to Casa do Sardinha and back; many walkers add a 30-minute detour up Pico do Furado for the best panoramic view.
It is the most-walked official trail on Madeira, partly because it requires no technical skill, partly because the views are immediate and dramatic from the first kilometre. The flip side: peak-season parking at the trailhead is brutal between 10:00 and 16:00, and the heat in July–August is genuinely punishing — 35 °C with full sun reflection off the rocks is normal.
What to know before you go
- Wear proper hiking shoes with grip — basalt gets slippery when damp, and most levada paths have a drop on one side.
- Pack two litres of water per person — there are no refill points on the route — and a light fleece for the ridge wind.
- A small head torch is useful in case the route enters any tunnel section.
- Mid-morning is fine, but earlier starts mean clearer views and emptier paths.
- Check the official 'Estado dos Trilhos' status before you go — trails close after storms or rockfalls.
- Start before 09:00 in summer. There is zero shade anywhere on the route.
- Carry 2 L of water per person — no fountains, no café until you return.
- Skip on red-wind days; the exposed sections become unsafe in strong gusts.
Best time to visit
October to May, when the eastern peninsula is mild rather than baking. Avoid midday in July and August — there is no shade.
