Madeira Bars & Nightlife
Poncha tascas, rooftop cocktail bars, live-music Old Town and late-night Funchal — where to drink after dark.
Nightlife on Madeira concentrates in two places: Funchal's Old Town (Rua de Santa Maria, Rua de Dom Carlos I, Praça do Município) for bar-hopping, live music and late-night drinking, and Câmara de Lobos for the traditional poncha experience earlier in the evening. Outside those, the rest of the island is quiet after dinner.
Poncha is the local hero drink — white sugar-cane rum (aguardente), bee honey and fresh lemon, shaken by hand with a wooden mexelote. The best is poured at small grocery-shop-turned-bar venues in Câmara de Lobos and a handful of Funchal tascas. Madeira wine is the other obvious order: fortified, sweet to dry, and almost always served by the glass.
Each entry below lists the venue's vibe (poncha bar, rooftop, cocktail bar, live music...), price band and whether it stays open late. For a curated guide to the best poncha bars specifically, see the linked list.

Frequently asked
- Where is the best nightlife in Madeira?
- Funchal Old Town (Zona Velha) — Rua de Santa Maria and the surrounding streets — is the centre of Madeira's nightlife, with dozens of bars, several with live music, and late-night drinking until 02:00 or later at weekends.
- What is poncha and where do I try it?
- Poncha is Madeira's traditional drink: sugar-cane rum (aguardente), bee honey and fresh lemon, shaken by hand. The most authentic poncha is found in old-school 'venda' bars in Câmara de Lobos — Venda da Donna Maria is the best-known — and in tascas in Funchal Old Town.
- Does Madeira have clubs?
- Yes, but the scene is small. Funchal has a handful of late-night bars and clubs that run until 04:00–06:00 on weekends, mostly concentrated near the Old Town and harbour. For a big-city club scene, this isn't the island.
- Is nightlife in Madeira expensive?
- Cheaper than Lisbon or major European capitals. A glass of poncha is typically €2–3, a cocktail €7–9, a beer €2–4. Rooftop and fine-cocktail bars sit at the higher end.
