Fajã dos Padres is a 300 m strip of pebbly beach at the base of a 250 m cliff, accessible only by a small cable car (€10 return) or by boat. The fajã itself is a working banana and grape plantation with a single restaurant, a handful of guesthouses, and a swimming jetty into deep, calm water sheltered by the cliff above. It is the most genuinely-secluded easily-reachable swim spot on the island.
What to know before you go
- Madeira's water is cooler than the Canaries — sea-surface temperatures sit around 19–23 °C through the year.
- Bring water shoes; entry is not soft-sand friendly.
- Cash is rarely required — cafés and parking meters mostly take cards.
- Parking fills early on summer weekends; arrive before 10:00 or after 16:00 for the best chance of a spot.
- Cable car runs roughly 10:00–18:00; last descent earlier in winter. Cash and card accepted.
- Restaurant reservations recommended for lunch — there is no alternative on the fajã.
Best time to visit
June to October is peak season for swimming, with the warmest water in September. The site stays open year-round but the Atlantic gets bigger and colder from November.
